Dots and Boxes Game Sheet
Two pencils and one sheet, and you have a game that lasts a lot longer than tic-tac-toe. Print it and you can start playing straight away.
The sheet is one thing only: a page-filling grid of evenly spaced dots, printed light enough to draw over and dark enough to see. No borders, no scoreboard, no cartoon mascot. The whole page is playing surface. A bigger grid gives you a longer game, so we did not waste any of it.

What you need
- The PDF, printed one-sided
- Plain copy paper
- Two pencils, or two pens in different colours
- Two players
Different colours are worth the small effort. Same-colour lines make it hard to reconstruct who did what when someone disputes a box, and someone always disputes a box.
Steps

Print the page matching your paper — Letter or A4 — at Actual Size. Fit to Page shrinks the dot spacing, which crowds the lines and makes the grid harder to draw on. Actual Size keeps the dots comfortably apart.

Decide how much grid you want. The full page is a long game — plan on twenty minutes or more. For a quick round, agree on a smaller rectangle in one corner and draw a light border around it. Do this before the first move, not when someone is losing.

Take turns drawing one line. Each turn, join two dots that sit side by side — horizontally or vertically, never diagonally. One line per turn. There is not much more to the rules than that.

Close a box, claim it, and go again. When your line completes the fourth side of a small square, write your initial inside it and take another turn immediately. Chains of boxes fall in one go, which is where the game gets good.

Play until every line is drawn. Count the initials. Most boxes wins. Draws happen, but they are rare here.
The bit that turns it into a real game
Early on, both players drift along filling in safe lines. Then the board runs out of safe moves and someone has to hand over a chain. That moment is where most beginners lose, usually without realising it.
Two things worth knowing:
- Count before you give. When you must open a chain, open the shortest one. A three-box chain hands over three boxes. A nine-box chain can hand over the game.
- The double-cross. Late in the game, an experienced player takes all but the last two boxes of a chain, then deliberately leaves those two — forcing the opponent to open the next chain instead. It looks like a blunder, and it is not one. It is worth teaching a child just to watch it land.
Play a few rounds before you introduce the double-cross. It is more fun for them to find it themselves.

One variation
Play with three or four people. Everyone picks an initial, turns go round the table, and the chain arithmetic gets genuinely difficult because handing a chain to the player on your left helps them and nobody else. It handles extra players better than most pencil games do. One sheet covers four people, with nothing else to buy.
You can also slip the sheet into a clear plastic sleeve and play in dry-wipe marker, wiping it clean between games.
